The Lorenz attractor

The Lorenz system consists of three nonlinear first-order differential equations with chaotic solutions:

The Lorenz equations

They were used to model certain atmospheric phenomena, first described in the paper: E.N. Lorenz, J. Atmos. Sci. 20:130 (1963). The solutions converge to the chaotic "Lorenz attractor". In the animation below the system state is indicated by the yellow ball wandering along the attractor.
